Part 3 is a discussion between you and the examiner lasting about four to five minutes. Its subject grows out of Part 2, but the questions become more general and abstract. If your long turn concerned a skill, the discussion might explore education, workplace training, technology, or how the skills a society needs could change. You may need to explain opinions, analyse causes, compare groups or periods, evaluate effects, and speculate about the future.
There is no preparation minute for this section. The examiner can follow your ideas, challenge a broad claim, or ask you to look at the issue from another angle. This is not an argument you must win. It is an opportunity to make your reasoning visible in clear English. A thoughtful answer can include uncertainty and limits; what matters is that each idea connects logically to the question and receives enough support.
Shift from personal experience to public issues
In Part 1, your own life is usually the natural centre of the answer. In Part 3, a personal example may still help, but the question often concerns people in general, institutions, trends, or possible consequences. Listen for scope words such as children, employers, cities, governments, in the future, or compared with the past. Match that scope before choosing your support.
If asked why people learn practical skills, do not stay only with your cooking experience from Part 2. You might discuss independence, employment, household costs, or confidence across different groups. A brief personal illustration can support one point, but it should serve the broader claim. This shift shows that you can move from a concrete case to a general explanation.
- People or groups: identify who is affected and whether experiences may differ.
- Cause: explain the mechanism, not only the result.
- Change: compare past and present using a clear basis.
- Evaluation: consider advantages, disadvantages, priorities, or limits.
- Prediction: state what may happen and the condition that could make it happen.
Build an argument in four moves
A useful structure is position, reason, illustration, and limit. Give your main answer first. Explain why it is true or how it works. Add a realistic example, comparison, or consequence. Then qualify the claim by naming an exception, condition, or alternative view. The fourth move prevents answers from becoming absolute and creates room for more precise language.
For example, if asked whether online learning can replace classrooms, your position might be that it can replace some instruction. Your reason could be access and flexible timing. An illustration might be recorded technical demonstrations. Your limit could be that young learners and practical subjects still benefit from immediate supervision. This answer is developed because its parts perform different jobs while supporting one central view.
Do not force the full structure onto a narrow follow-up. Sometimes the examiner wants a clarification or a second reason, and two well-formed sentences are enough. Listen to the new question rather than continuing the answer you had planned. Relevant flexibility is more valuable than length for its own sake.
- Position: answer directly and define the extent of your claim.
- Reason: explain why it happens or why you hold that view.
- Illustration: make the reasoning concrete with an example, comparison, or effect.
- Limit: add an exception, condition, trade-off, or alternative perspective.
Use language for analysis and precision
Analytical vocabulary is often functional rather than decorative. Cause can be expressed with stems from, encourages, makes it easier to, or is partly driven by. Comparison can use whereas, in contrast, tends to, or is more likely to. Qualification can use to some extent, in many cases, provided that, or this depends largely on. Learn these expressions with complete ideas so that they help you reason instead of becoming empty linking phrases.
Avoid unsupported universal claims. Words such as everyone, never, and completely are rarely necessary. More defensible language includes many people, in some settings, may, can, tends to, and one possible effect. Qualification is not weakness; it allows your grammar and vocabulary to represent reality more accurately.
If you need thinking time, use one brief phrase that begins the reasoning: I think the main reason is..., There are probably two sides to this..., or It depends on the age group.... Then continue. Repeating several fillers delays the answer and can weaken coherence. If the question is unclear, it is reasonable to ask the examiner to repeat it. Once you understand, address it directly.
Respond to challenge, interruption, and uncertainty
The examiner may interrupt, ask Why?, request another example, or present an opposing possibility. This is a normal part of a live discussion. Stop, listen, and treat the follow-up as help in exploring the topic more deeply. You can extend your view, narrow it, or revise it. Phrases such as That would be true if..., A stronger example might be..., or I had not considered that, but... let you adapt without abandoning coherence.
When you lack specialist knowledge, reason from everyday principles instead of inventing facts. You might say that you cannot predict the exact technology, but access, cost, or human contact will probably influence adoption. Part 3 tests spoken communication, not expert knowledge of every social issue. A transparent, well-supported possibility is safer than a confident statistic you cannot justify.
Practise with mini-discussions rather than isolated monologues. Ask a partner to challenge one word in each answer: all people, better, expensive, useful, or future. If you practise alone, record a question, answer it, then play the final sentence and generate two follow-ups. This trains the listening-and-response cycle that makes Part 3 different from the long turn.
Practice example
Should schools spend more time teaching practical life skills?
Yes, I think schools should give practical skills a more visible place, although they should not replace core academic subjects. One reason is that not every student has the same opportunities to learn tasks such as budgeting, basic cooking, or evaluating an employment contract at home. Teaching them at school could provide a common foundation and make the transition to independent life less stressful. For instance, a short budgeting project could ask students to plan a monthly income, compare essential costs, and respond to an unexpected expense. That would combine mathematics with a realistic decision. However, schools have limited time, so the most sensible approach may be to integrate these skills into existing subjects or offer short project weeks rather than create a large number of separate classes.
Why it works: The response states a qualified position, explains an equality-based reason, and uses a specific school project to show how the proposal might work. It then recognises the timetable constraint and offers a practical alternative. The argument remains focused while moving through cause, illustration, limitation, and solution.
